As essential healthcare providers, we strive to improve the delivery of patient-centered oral healthcare. Individualized risk assessment and patient education is a critical component of achieving periodontal wellness and improving outcomes for our patients. This program will review key strategies outlined in the updated 2017 AAP/EPF WWDC and discuss its usefulness as a tool to communicate disease activity and risks of future disease with patients. This program will provide tools to incorporate the periodontal disease classification into real-world dental practice, using the cases presented, audience feedback, and Q&A. Finally, this program will discuss best practices for calibration of the dental team using the 2017 AAP/EPF WWDC as a communication tool to optimize patient understanding, care, and outcomes of treatment.
