Apex Locators

An important part of canal preparation is the accurate detection of the canal terminus. This measurement helps determine how far instruments should advance within the root canal and at what point the preparation and filling should stop.

The clinician must also maintain precise control of working length during the root canal procedure to avoid root perforation. A root perforation can lead to short- and long-term complications for the patient, including infection, additional surgery, and a more painful recovery.

To reliably achieve a high level of accuracy and precision, Dentsply Sirona offers two trusted brands of electronic apex locators – ProMark and Root ZX II.

Conductivity Measurement

An apex locator has a pair of electrodes, one typically clipped to a patient’s lip and the other attached to an endodontic file. When the tip of the file contacts the periodontal tissue, the three components form a complete electric circuit. Resistance then decreases and a current begins to flow, which triggers the device to sound or register a digital readout.

An Apex Locator measures the impedance, frequency, and resistance of surrounding material – different devices using different principles to determine lengths. These electronic devices have been shown to be more accurate than radiography when determining the position of the apical foramen.

ProMark Apex Locator

The ProMark Apex Locator delivers precise length determination for dependable performance. The unit has been independently evaluated for proven multi-frequency accuracy and repeatability.

The foldable design makes the device portable, while maintaining a full-size color touchscreen. Unfolded, the unit reveals an adjustable tilt screen with full canal and apical zoom views. This provides the dentist a close-up view of the all-important section between apical constriction and apical foramen. The color screen displays an apical indication line with corresponding audio cues.

The clinician may set a preferred indication line or working length anywhere in the apical constriction area of the canal. Two background displays and two sound indicators provide additional opportunities to meet the user’s preferences. Features include automatic calibration, rechargeable battery, and status indicator.

Root ZX II Apex Locator

Root ZX II produces unmatched clinical accuracy. The advanced electronic device is not affected by blood, electrolytes, or other discharges. Automatic calibration and shock-resistant design are just a few of the features that make Root ZX II a marketing-leading product.

Root ZX II is lightweight and offers exceptional durability. The base of the unit has been modified for even greater stability during procedures. The large, color LCD screen is easy to read, providing a clear and progressive display with high contrast. The action of the meter in the display corresponds exactly to the tactile sensation of using the file.

Invented in 1992, Root ZX was the first apex locator with the ability to work in wet canals. The ratio technique used in the instrument provides highly accurate detection of the file’s location. Its patented technology has been independently evaluated to be 97.5% accurate.^*
