When Dr. Jack Slome set up his practice, he envisioned something special. Not a conventional medical office but a unique and artistic experience for staff and patients alike. With the Accolade Dental Centre in Toronto, he made his vision come true.
It is the artistic harmony that first catches the eye. Vibrant streaks of color alternating with soft taupe and elegant white lead the way into a lounge-style waiting area.
“I wanted to create a warm, inviting environment, where colors and design elements as well as the furniture melt into a consistent composition. With equipment that does not break up the overall impression but blends into it with a distinctive design of its own and features that support my vision: I wanted my practice to be the best – the practice that people want to go to. I believe we achieved that,” he says.
High-end technology and an amazing team
Born in South Africa, the dental professional came to Canada with his family in 1993. In 2017, he moved with his practice to the 250 square meters premises on Yorkville Avenue. Led by a vision of dentistry centered around the triad of efficiency, organization, and consistency, he also built up the practice carefully, combining an amazing team with high-end technology. “I love being a dentist. I love interacting with the patients, I love the technology, but I also love the artistic side of it,” says Dr. Slome. As to the design, the marriage of orange and taupe proved to be a creative hit, adding, “When we planned the interior design, we chose the colors carefully. I love the bright orange; it lifts me up every day. And my patients feel comfortable with the calming taupe which balances the interplay of colors artfully.” Much natural light in every room sets the stage for the orange elements; colorful pictures create a relaxing atmosphere and invite the viewer to discover surprising vistas all over the practice. “I chose some of the artwork for the bright colors, some for the optical balance they create in a room. Several of the paintings were commissioned by me from some of my patients as I enjoy their style of painting.”
In times of COVID-19, the benefit of the equipment once more came to my team’s awareness.
Following his artistic aspiration, the choice of artwork and the color scheme are complemented by the selection of technology. “I like things to be organized and efficient. Since I spend eight hours a day working in my practice, I wanted things to run smoothly. Moreover, we have trained our patients to have high expectations, which means that we must perform on a constantly high level,” says Dr. Slome. Early on in his more than 30-year career, he fell in love with Dentsply Sirona equipment. “Everything is easy and connected and comfortable to work with – starting with hygiene and X-rays up to the treatment workflow with CEREC and the Imaging software Sidexis 4,” Dr. Slome says.
The creative practice design and choice of equipment unfailingly leaves an impression on patients, as Dr. Slome observes, “Patients today are very aware of what they expect from dental treatment. When they come to us, they always respond very positively. They feel comfortable and well treated. Everybody notices the technology, not only because the equipment is beautiful – it fits into the practice.”
As they are all set up with the same equipment, the rooms can be flexibly used for dental or hygiene treatment.
“Whatever procedure we do, with our treatment center –Teneo – we have all the equipment at hand. Everything is integrated including the X-ray and intraoral camera. That makes treatment routines efficient, and my team does not have to think about every little thing.” -Dr. Jack Slome

What is your concept for success?
Dr. Slome: With 18 staff members, we can offer a broad range of services, covering general dentistry as well as specializations in pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and cosmetic services including restorations, implants, aligners and veneers or same-day crowns with CEREC.
In times of COVID-19, what do patients expect of dentists?
Patients are very aware of safety precautions. As we always made a point of uncompromising hygiene and sterilization processes, we did not need to upgrade our equipment or change workflows in that respect. But we added other things to our daily routines: We now wear gowns as well as the usual gloves and masks, have air exchangers in treatment rooms and each dentist and hygienist alternates rooms to allow aerosols to settle between patients.
