Aerosols in the Dental Industry

Avoiding aerosols by all means possible has become a major aim in the dental industry in the past months. Facing this new challenge has motivated us to develop a solution to create a safer environment for you, your team and your patients. Our goal with this new solution is to remove as many of your concerns regarding aerosols as possible so that you can focus on what matters most, treating your patients.

An easy comparison (below) clearly shows the outcome of our simple and effective solution: A clear difference in the spray mists. By blocking the spray air, the spray is more ringed, therefore, the risk of contaminated aerosol dispersion is reduced. When the treatment is performed properly, a sufficient cooling function with water is still provided (as required by ISO 14457:2017-10), thus ensuring that the teeth will not be damaged as a result of the cooling air no longer being accessible. Adjustment of working speed and pressure is highly recommended.

We suggest a 3-part solution to combat the aerosol generated by your handpiece during preparatory procedures:

1) A pin can be fitted into either your high speed / slow speed hose line on your Dentsply Sirona Treatment Centre to reduce air flow, thereby reducing spray.

2) Opt for a red band handpiece which naturally has a reduced spray compared to air-driven turbines

3) The two options above can be combined for optimal results.

The Pin Solution

Whether you continue to use your high speed turbine or opt for a red band handpiece, we have a solution to considerably lessen the fine spray mist created.

How it works

In order to decrease the amount of aerosol dispersed when using a contra-angle or turbine, the amount of air in the cooling spray has to be reduced. For this, a simple pin has been developed. It fits perfectly in the spray air tube at the connection of the hose to the treatment centre. The pin blocks the air of the spray, thus aerosol is reduced.

The installation process of the pin is very simple and can be done without any additional assistance, at no cost to you.

PLEASE NOTE: The Aerosol pin solution IS NOT SUITABLE for Continental Style (CS) Whip Arm Delivery systems.

Reducing Aerosol

Clear difference visible

Red Band Handpieces in Dentistry

Because of the angulation of our red band handpieces, and the concentrated four nozzle spray, our red band handpieces provide less mist in a more concentrated zone than turbine/air driven options. Red band handpieces are excellent for gross reduction of tooth structure as they provide an efficient cut while maintaining high precision handling. Many indications that you may be using an air turbine for, such as cavity and crown preparation, could be completed beautifully with a red band handpiece. Red bands allow for more controlled precision work at higher speeds than other electric options.

Aerosol Dispersion Comparison

Water & Air Spray

Working with a red contra-angle or traditional high-speed handpiece produces a lot of aerosol. Sufficient cooling is important to avoid thermal damages to the tooth.

Only Water Spray

Spray air contributes significantly to spray mist in dental instruments. Blocking the spray air leads to more ringed spray mist, thereby reducing the risk of contaminated aerosol dispersion. Teeth will not be damaged without cooling air, as a sufficient cooling function by water is still given when proper treatment is performed.

Aerosol Dispersion Comparison

Working with an air-driven turbine produces more aerosol than working with a red contra-angle.

This solution is applicable to both red band handpieces and air turbines. However, red band contra angles emit a lower spray from the outset. So the ideal solution would be to combine the use of a red band handpiece with the pin solution.

No. The solution is only suitable and recommended for Dentsply Sirona Treatment Centres.

In general yes. Due to the ideally positioned spray holes in our instruments, this solution works best when used with Dentsply Sirona instruments. The application of this solution with instruments from third-party manufacturers is possible if sufficient cooling can be secured; the blocking of the spray air can have a smaller effect when applied to non-Dentsply Sirona instruments.

The responsibility for the safety and efficacy of this solution in combination with third party manufacturer instruments resides completely with the dental professional as these have not been verified by Dentsply Sirona.

No, since the solution is applied at the hose at the treatment centre side.

We recommend to adapt treatments in terms of speed and pressure applied, as well as visual inspections of the working area to ensure temperature control. Even though the air is blocked, sufficient cooling when working with Dentsply Sirona instruments is given. The application of this solution with instruments from third-party manufacturers is possible if sufficient cooling can be secured. This must be checked beforehand and responsibility for the safety and efficacy of this solution with third party manufacturer instruments rests solely with the dental professional.

No. The spray of the ultrasonic handpieces is produced mechanically without air. The water jet meets the oscillating tip and thus aerosol is formed.
