Learn more about the Active Moisture Control
Technical Video Technical Video

Moisture Levels Vary. Our Bond Won’t.

Prime&Bond active introduces the new, patented Active-Guard Technology. Our formulation provides well balanced hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties to ensure complete coverage and penetration at varying moisture levels. So even if dentin is overly wet or dry, you get a reliable bond that actively guards against the leading causes of adhesive failure.

Why choose Prime&Bond active?

Active moisture control

Reliable performance on over-wet and over-dried dentin

Virtually no post-operative sensitivity

Based on a user survey

Low film thickness

For a reduced risk of pooling and misfit of the restoration.

Versatility

For use with all etching methods, all indications

Convenience & control

Flip-top cap for one-handed opening, low viscosity for easy application, and a relaxed working time and reduced waste, remaining usable for 30 minutes in a closed CliXdish

Active advantage

Convinience and Control
  • Flip-top cap for one-handed opening
  • Low viscosity for easy application
  • Up to 30 minutes working time in a closed CliXdish, reducing waste when filling multiple cavities

Active moisture control

Most adhesives are comparatively hydrophobic, tending to separate from water. With too much water on the prepared surface, the adhesive can’t achieve uniform coverage, leaving gaps that may weaken the bond and may cause post-operative sensitivity. If dentin is overly dried, collagen fibers can collapse and prevent effective sealing. Prime&Bond active overcomes the surface tension of water and spreads across dentin and into dentinal tubules to form an even, homogeneous layer. Upon air-drying, the solvent and water evaporate together, leaving a consistent coating of adhesive across the entire surface to ensure a strong bond.

Prime&Bond active

To ensure a homogeneous application, water and solvent evaporate together, leaving an even, consistent adhesive layer.

Scotchbond™ Universal

Cannot overcome the surface tension of water. Adhesive and water remain separated.

iBOND® Universal

Cannot overcome the surface tension of water. Adhesive and water remain separated.

TOO WET OR TOO DRY: NO PROBLEM.

Active cavity spreading for Prime&Bond active vs Scotchbond Universal & iBOND Universal

Inherent surface tension prevents other adhesives from spreading easily across the surface of the cavity. Dry spots that remain unbonded can weaken the restoration and may lead to post-operative sensitivity and microleakage. Prime&Bond active is formulated to spread actively, minimizing the risk of inadvertently leaving dry spots.

Prime&Bond active

A single drop, placed using a micro brush without further manipulation, naturally spreads across most of the surface.

Scotchbond™ Universal

Other universal adhesives resist spreading.

iBOND® Universal

Other universal adhesives resist spreading.

Low Film Thickness

Thick adhesives can have a tendency to pool in the corners of the proximal box of a Class II restoration. These adhesive pools can show up as translucent areas on a radiograph, which can easily be misdiagnosed as a void, gap, or secondary decay, leading to unnecessary replacement. Thicker adhesives may also change crown prep geometry, impacting crown fit. Prime&Bond active self-levels to actively create a thin, uniform adhesive layer.

What exactly makes Prime&Bond active so unique regarding its technology and handling? Why is Prime&Bond active NOT just another universal adhesive?

Frequently asked questions

No, Prime&Bond active is not radiopaque. The low film thickness and the self-levelling properties help to reduce the risk of adhesive pools that might become visible on radiographs as grey areas which can be misdiagnosed as recurrent decay.

No.

Isopropanol (=alcohol) and water.

As long as the dentin is not exposed to the etchant for more than 15 seconds, there is no negative impact.

No. When used with Calibra Ceram, Prime&Bond active does not require any activators. However, when using Prime&Bond active with any other dual- or self-cure resin material (e.g. Core.X-flow or products from other manufacturers than Dentsply Sirona), it has to be mixed with Dentsply Sirona Self-Cure Activator.

The pH value of Prime&Bond active is 2.7.

Prime&Bond active contains MDP and thus can be used instead of a primer for restorations made of zirconia or metal.

However, glass ceramic restorations (e.g CEREC Tessera), should be pre-treated according to the manufacturer´s instructions, e.g. with silane.

Prime&Bond Selective Enamel Etching Image

When it comes to the success of these restorations, the adhesive step plays a critical role. In vitro studies have indicated that the gingival margin in class II composite restorations is the most common location of bonding failures. Additional studies have proven the dentin adhesive bond of resin-based composite to gingival walls is significantly weaker, and thus, at increased risk of failure compared to the bond to proximal walls. For Class II restorations, the selective-etch technique, shown in this picture, is recommended because it allows a high bond to enamel while virtually eliminating the risk of sensitivity on dentin by minimizing exposure to etchant. Research has shown etching on deep dentin can increase the probably of post-operative sensitivity and minimizing sensitivity can help achieve a high level of patient satisfaction which can impact referrals and practice health.

Another key feature of adhesive for Class II restorations is low film thickness. In Class II restorations, thick adhesives can pool in the corners of the proximal box. These adhesive pools can show up as translucent areas on a radiograph, which can easily be mis-diagnosed as a void, gap, or secondary decay, leading to unnecessary replacement. Prime&Bond active adhesive provides a lower film thickness than many commercially available adhesive systems.
