There are so many new and innovative types of technologies and advancements in the field of dental hygiene. While it is always the goal to practice and deliver evidence-based treatment to our clients, the fundamental pieces of proper ergonomics must be in place for successful outcomes. This course will review four key concepts to help the dental hygienist move to a safer, smarter, and with improved access to enable more effective treatment delivery. These essential pieces must be put into practice each time the patient sits in the dental chair. Having a consistent strategy around visibility and ease of access while keeping your body relaxed and in alignment is key to practicing successfully for both you and your patient.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Discuss the essential elements of obtaining visibility from a static posture utilizing two-handed high-speed evacuation techniques.
  • Review the importance of the patient's chin and head position for optimal vision and fluid/aerosol evacuation.
  • Identify the sources of hand and wrist pain in relationship to pinch force during instrumentation and fluid evacuation.
