Intraoral radiographic data acquisition is critical for optimum diagnosis and treatment planning as well as sequencing therapy. The course will review the foundation for the systematic evaluation of intraoral radiographs. We will discuss the recommendations for appropriate radiographic selection to balance patient protection and diagnostic information collection.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, learners should be able to:
1. Understand selection criteria such as the American Dental Association’s recommended selection and be able to provide scientific reason as to why deviation from the recommendation is necessary
2. Identify factors affecting the quality of radiographs, including those mimicking pathology
3. Explain the various methods by which the dose absorbed by the patient can be minimized. For example, using rectangular instead of round collimation
4. Identify normal anatomic structures
5. Identify common abnormalities
