The programme aims to provide practitioners with an update on material choice for posterior approximal restorations – with a focus on approaches that replace the use of amalgam.

During this series of 4 webinars, delegates will revisit the fundamental principles behind cavity design, and the specific technical requirements of direct restorative materials. We will revisit the mechanisms of micromechanical bonding and discuss the importance of substrates, and selective approaches. Whilst visiting the concept of posterior approximal preparations and restorations, we will discuss the concept of deep margin elevation and when considering anterior approximal restorations we will visit some fundamentals in relation to employing the use of wax-ups and matrices.

Learning content

This webinar will cover the properties and indications of a range of direct restorative materials, making reference to ISO standards and requirements. The webinar will talk about the phase down of amalgam and how this will impact on direct restorative choice -and how other materials can be applied in challenging situations.

Aims and objectives

  • Recall the required characteristics of direct restorative materials
  • Discuss the ISO standards and requirements of composites and glass polyalkenoate cements
  • Consider aspects of cavity design, longevity and maintenance (including deep margin elevation)
