To understand the systemic microbial and inflammatory burden of periodontitis, accurately diagnosing periodontal disease is of utmost importance. The 2017 AAP/EPF World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions (WWDC) represents a paradigm shift in periodontal care. The staging of the periodontitis and subsequent grading of the progression based on systemic and local risk factors are critical for periodontal therapy. Developing an understanding of periodontal and peri-implant diseases as a continuum and utilizing this a common language to promote wellness with our patients is critical.

Learning Objectives:

  • Capture and apply oral examination findings to aid in early identification and intervention for periodontal diseases
  • Recognize modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors for periodontal disease progression
  • Effectively stratify patients and identify therapeutic needs based upon accurate diagnoses and risk assessment
