In a recent impactful action, Dentsply Sirona and Project 32 completed a one week-long free dental expedition to remote Amazonian communities—leveraging connected digital dentistry and global collaboration to increase access to oral health in one of Brazil’s most underserved regions.
Charlotte, N.C., June, 2025. Dentsply Sirona, the world’s largest diversified manufacturer of professional dental products and technologies, has successfully completed a groundbreaking dental expedition in partnership with the Brazilian non-governmental organization (NGO) Project 32. The initiative aimed to increase access to oral healthcare by providing free, high-quality dental services to underserved riverside communities in the Amazon region.
The expedition, which aligns with Dentsply Sirona’s sustainability program “BEYOND: Taking Action for a Brighter World”, took place from June 1 to 7. It brought advanced oral health treatments to residents of Rolim de Moura do Guaporé, a remote municipality in Rondônia state, northern Brazil—home to more than 55,000 people.
A total of 20 dentists supported the expedition, with half participating remotely from their own clinics. Thanks in part to DS Core, Dentsply Sirona’s cloud-based platform, these virtual team members were able to receive and review intraoral scans in real time. This remote collaboration allowed them to advise on diagnoses and treatment options without needing to travel, significantly expanding the expedition’s clinical capacity while minimizing its environmental impact. By the end of the expedition, a total of 2000 endodontic and restorative procedures had been carried out thanks to the use of advanced digital dentistry tools, including intraoral scanning and same-day prosthetic fabrication.
To date, the partnership between Dentsply Sirona and Project 32, which has been in place since 2013, has enabled over 30,000 advanced dental procedures in vulnerable communities across Brazil. Dr. Manoel Eduardo de Lima Machado, founder of Project 32, outlines how connected digital dentistry is allowing them to deliver exceptional care with speed and safety, even in the most remote areas: “By using advanced techniques and high-performance technologies, we’re able to deliver exceptional care that is efficient for everyone involved. Digital dentistry brings both safety and agility — for the patient and the professional. The dentistry we practice is exactly what should be accessible to everyone, whether they are in the public or private healthcare system.”
“Our latest expedition is a powerful example of how digital technologies are advancing care in remote areas and increasing access to oral health care. We are transforming lives while also supporting our goal of creating 25 million healthy smiles by the end of 2025,” says Andrea Frohning, SVP, Chief Human Resources Officer at Dentsply Sirona.
Separate from Project 32, Dentsply Sirona is also partnering with other organizations such as Smile Train, Amazon Doctors, and TeamSmile to increase access to oral health.
The Company’s inclusion in Newsweek’s America’s Most Responsible Companies ranking underscores its dedication to increase access to oral health and to forge impactful partnerships that bring about a real difference in people’s lives.
The NGO Project 32, founded by dentist and endodontics professor Manoel Eduardo de Lima Machado, has been working since 2013 to democratize access to highly complex oral procedures through digital dentistry in remote regions with a history of social vulnerability in Brazil.
