The CEREC Restorative Workflow

Restorations in a single visit

For 30 years CEREC has been synonymous with the creation of ceramic restorations in a single visit. Today, 6.5 million patients are treated with CEREC each year, which is more than the number of annual visitors to the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

An impressive workflow is the result of the perfect interaction between hardware and software. Starting with the digital impression, the all new CEREC Primescan is the basis for outstanding results, which are further enabled by the intuitive CEREC Software and the fast and precise CEREC milling and grinding units and brought to perfection by CEREC SpeedFire, the smallest sintering furnace on the market.

I underestimated how happy my patients are about single-visit treatments – and especially how much they spread the word!

Dr. Tim Nolting, dentist in Freudenberg, Germany

The final restoration in just a few steps

Step 1: Scan
Spare your patients the discomfort of a conventional impression tray. Use CEREC Primescan or CEREC Omnicam for precise 3D images in natural color.
Step 2: Design
After analyzing the complete scan, the CEREC software generates outstanding restoration proposals. This takes you to the production stage faster. You benefit from the simple and visually appealing user interface.
Step 3: Produce
The CEREC grinding and milling unit and CEREC software are optimally matched. Milling/grinding the (full zirconia) restoration design is extremely precise, giving the restorations smooth surfaces, edges and very fine fissures.
Step 4: Sinter and glaze
Full-contour zirconia restorations are sintered and glazed chairside in the compact CEREC SpeedFire. The induction technology allows for unparalleled short sintering and firing times.

Frequently asked questions about the CEREC workflow

Of course, this depends on each user and his or her individual routine and internal workflows. One to two hours is usually required to plan, produce, and place a CEREC restoration, depending on the extent of the restoration. Pure “doctor time” only makes up only a small part of the overall process.

  • The CEREC system is so intuitive that it ensures a quick learning curve and therefore less doctor time and the whole process is shorter.
  • Tasks can also be delegated to the practice team which also allows for less doctor time. For examples, tasks such as creating a patient case in the software, intraoral scanning, and preparing the milling machine can be delegated to your team.

During the milling process you can treat another patient or carry out another task.

The advantages for the patient:

In a patient survey, about 85 % of patients would like to receive their treatment in a single visit. They would also be prepared to travel further to do so. The main reasons for this are that the patient is only given one anesthetic and that no temporary prosthesis is required, which may be unstable and fall out, meaning it saves time as the patient does not have to make several visits.

The benefits for the dentist:

Taking the whole restoration treatment into consideration, the dentist saves time that can be used for other tasks. In addition, in this specific case the laboratory services can be brought to the practice – this increases the profitability of the practice. The dentist maintains control over the whole process. Another important advantage is that the treated patient is satisfied and will recommend you to others.
