The dentists of the Burgergut practice show how harmonious interior design contributes to patient relaxation. Old wooden beams, a rustic wooden reception counter and cozy seating: Even the first impression of the Burgergut dental practice in Steffisburg, Switzerland, is surprising. With its coffee bar, the waiting room looks like an inviting café, and the view looks out over the green surroundings and Thun Castle.
Colorful paintings, glass vases with aesthetic arrangements of branches, muted earth tones and high-quality materials define the image. Individual seating groups invite you to take a seat. In the five treatment rooms and the laboratory rooms, the hand-planed exposed beams create a charming contrast to modern technology and professionalism.
Relaxed atmosphere – the first impression counts
In April 2020, the team of Dr. Chris Hasler, Dr. Chanketh Nagamany and Dr. Simon Käch moved into the 300-square-meter space on the top floor of the building complex, which was built in 1770 and is now a healthcare building.
"We were inspired by the possibilities of this historic building as well as the green surroundings," says Dr. Hasler. Thus, the first impression surprises patients, as it does not meet many expectations regarding a dental practice.
This effect continues in the rooms. "We treat many anxious patients who have consciously chosen us. The interior design of our practice creates an open, relaxed atmosphere. It smells like coffee in our practice – this first impression alone subconsciously takes some of the tension away from many patients," explains Dr. Hasler.
Natural element of wood – valuable and familiar
Likewise, the natural element of wood contributes to a positive atmosphere. "The natural, warm look of the wooden beams conveys a sense of calm that also has an effect on our patients. They are so taken in by the ambience that they are also very relaxed during treatment," says Dr. Käch.
The historic beams convey a sense of value that doesn't feel aloof, but rather evokes positive associations of a cozy home. Likewise, inspiration from the surroundings flows in: The view out the window shows Thun Castle. "With pictures of royal couples, we picked up on that castle feeling in the practice," Dr. Nagamany says.
Another pillar of trust is the practice's holistic approach to treatment. As Dr. Hasler points out, "Our dentists are qualified to perform any treatment in principle. This means that a patient can be cared for by the person he has known and trusted for a long time. This is a great advantage, especially for patients with anxiety."
In the treatment rooms, the historic wooden beam-look runs through the practice like a common thread as a design element. Modern technology such as the Teneo treatment center forms a charming contrast.
With five dentists, the practice can offer the entire spectrum of dentistry, including orthodontics. A pediatric dentist takes care of the youngest patients. Two dental hygienists and four dental assistants as well as two other employees complete the team. With the Lauitor Dental Institute, a partner practice is also part of the concept. "My current colleagues Dr. Simon Käch and Dr. Chanketh Nagamany joined me in this practice - what unites us is our enthusiasm for modern dentistry," explains Dr. Hasler.
Modern technology, according to Dr. Hasler's experience, gives confidence: "We have emphasized state-of-the-art equipment – that is our unique selling point. The Primescan intraoral scanner impresses patients and the joint interaction during treatment is reassuring." Another aspect that was important to Dr. Hasler and his team: "In a modern technology portfolio, all components function as a unit. The patient also benefits from efficient, integrated solutions because treatment is faster. We were particularly impressed by the Teneo treatment center with its seamless treatment workflow."

The labs - shown here with CEREC Primemill and CEREC SpeedFire sintering furnace – are dominated by professional white, interrupted by the wooden beam look which runs through the practice as a natural accent.
Modern technology – such as the Orthophos 3D X-ray unit – inspires the team and patients of Dr. Hasler, Dr. Käch and Dr. Nagamany. Supplemented by the CEREC Primemill and an in-house dental laboratory, the practice has the capability to produce crowns, bridges and dentures directly on site.
