As essential healthcare providers, we strive to improve the delivery of patient-centered oral healthcare. Individualized risk assessment and patient education is a critical component of achieving periodontal wellness and improving outcomes for our patients. This program will review key strategies outlined in the updated 2017 AAP/EPF WWDC and discuss its usefulness as a tool to communicate disease activity and risks of future disease with patients. This program will provide tools to incorporate the periodontal disease classification into real-world dental practice, using the cases presented, audience feedback, and Q&A. Finally, this program will discuss best practices for calibration of the dental team using the 2017 AAP/EPF WWDC as a communication tool to optimize patient understanding, care, and outcomes of treatment.

Course Objectives
After attending this course, the participant will:

Capture and apply oral examination findings to aid in early identification and intervention for periodontal diseases.
Effectively stratify patients and identify therapeutic needs based upon accurate diagnoses and risk assessment.
Employ the tools within the 2017 AAP/EPF WWDC to create personalized treatment strategies that address the needs of individual patients.
