A series of interactive learning courses about sustainability in dentistry 

Sustainability is humanity’s most urgent challenge. As individuals, communities and businesses, we must all act now to protect the future of our planet, create a fairer, more inclusive society and ensure the highest standards of ethics and responsibility.

The dental industry is no exception. In a global study commissioned by us, nearly three-quarters of you told us becoming more sustainable is important for dentistry yet 7 in 10 of you also believe our industry is lagging behind on actually doing so.

Led by experienced dentistry and sustainability experts with a passion for bringing about change, this curriculum aims to help close that gap. For a quick reference download a ESG glossary here.

During five inspiring, interactive courses, you will learn what sustainability means for the dental industry and why it is so important. We will introduce you to key terms, goals and initiatives, including the FDI’s Pledge for Sustainable Dentistry. And you will discover clear, practical steps for how to work more sustainably.

For each module you complete, you will also earn 1 CE credits.

Sustainability in dentistry - Let's go BEYOND!

Module 1

Discover what sustainability really means for the dental industry – environmentally, socially and ethically. Prof. Dr. Rainer Seemann, Vice President of Global Clinical Research and acting Chief Clinical Officer at Dentsply Sirona and Professor at the Department of Operative-, Preventive- and Paediatric Dentistry at the University Berne in Switzerland, and Dr. Steven Mulligan, dentist, honorary clinical fellow and a founding member of the FDI World Dental Federation Sustainability in Dentistry Task Team, also discuss a selection of key terms, challenges and opportunities, and explains why we must all act now to make dentistry more sustainable before it is too late.

Module 2

Learn about the FDI’s Pledge for Sustainable Dentistry and how you can put it into practice in your everyday work. This module also provides a series of clear steps and best practice examples to help you reduce your climate footprint and safeguard the future of the planet. You will also find patient education resources that make it easier for you to share your progress and increase awareness amongst patients.

Module 3

Discover how we create a more diverse, equitable and inclusive dental industry. Improving access to oral care

Module 4

Find out what you can do to improve access to oral care in underserved communities and help people lead happier, healthier lives. We also take a close look at Dentsply Sirona’s partnership with Smile Train, the world’s largest cleft organization providing corrective surgery for children with cleft lips and palates and describe ways to take action together with us.

Module 5

Learn how to build awareness and action beyond practice staff by engaging patients and local communities around sustainability. We also share effective approaches for monitoring and measuring success along with further resources to continue your sustainable dentistry journey.

Meet our lecturers

Dr. Steve Mulligan

Dr. Steven Mulligan is a clinician, teacher and researcher based in South Yorkshire, U.K. He is a founding member of the FDI World Dental Federation’s Sustainability in Dentistry Task Team which aims to provide guidance to improve sustainability throughout the entire dental supply chain (from manufacturing, via distribution, through clinical use and disposal). In this role he has co-authored an industry ratified Consensus Statement on environmental sustainability in oral healthcare and developed a toolkit for clinicians. He has published extensively on the topic of environmental sustainability in dentistry and is a peer reviewer for multiple journals. He is an international speaker and key opinion leader to GSK, P&G, SDCEP and the FDI World Dental Federation.

Prof. Dr. Rainer Seemann

Prof. Dr. Rainer Seemann, DMD, PhD (Dr. med. dent. habil.), MBA is Vice President Global Clinical Research and acting Chief Clinical Officer at Dentsply Sirona and Professor at the Department of Operative-, Preventive- and Pediatric Dentistry of the University Berne, Switzerland. Dr. Seemann studied Dentistry in Berlin, Germany and worked in several positions at the Dental School of the Charité, Berlin University Clinic, Germany before joining Dentsply Sirona. He finished his PhD (habilitation) in 2006 and holds an MBA in Health Care Management since 2007.
