Home Explore Implantology DS Academy's Dental Implant Curriculum Level 2: Posterior Single-Tooth Dental Implant Procedures

Level 2: Posterior Single-Tooth Dental Implant Procedures

Level 2 Outline

Utilizing procedure-based education*, this level will illustrate the basic surgical and prosthetic concepts of implant therapy through a presentation of two single-tooth posterior implant cases.

Throughout this level, the cases will cover topics including:

  • Concepts for determining implant position in treatment planning
  • Implant design features and their impact on outcomes
  • Introduction to the Astra Tech Implant System EV
  • Primary stability vs. insertion torque
  • Custom healing abutments
  • Overview of guided surgery

Upon the completion of this level, participants will understand how to place and restore a single-tooth implant in the posterior zone. Participants are encouraged to continue their education in Level 3, which will focus on the single-tooth implant in the anterior zone.

*The implant curriculum is an interactive, procedure-based series of courses that use individual cases to teach current implant treatment. This approach is in contrast to conventional dental education that focuses more on didactic topics and theory. The purpose of using this educational approach is to highlight the patients and procedures found in everyday clinical practice, where the most important concepts are observed and discussed in multiple clinical scenarios.

Outlining fundamental surgical techniques and drilling protocols
Presenting the step-by-step process in a clinic-to-lab workflow
Discussing established and novel restorative materials and design principles

Course Topics

Part I: Free-hand Surgery

With Lyndon Cooper, DDS, PhD

In this course, we will highlight the replacement of a missing bicuspid in a patient with type-2 diabetes, showing the importance of proper planning to successfully restore function and esthetics.

Key topics highlighted in this case include:

  • Comprehensive treatment planning using the “Rules of Six”
  • Implant design features and their impact on outcomes
  • An examination of insertion torque vs. primary stability

Part II: Guided Surgery

With Bryan Limmer, DDS, MS

This course highlights the replacement of missing tooth #19, which was lost due to root fracture. We will discuss the role of comprehensive treatment planning and the predictability that guided surgery brings.

Key topics highlighted in this case include:

  • A streamlined digital implant workflow for single-tooth replacements
  • The importance of surgical guides for correct positioning
  • The advantages of custom healing abutments and how they relate to the final restoration
